Every so often on the fringe of larger series of oil paintings, Bellefleur gives himself a kind of vacation during which he enjoys getting back to his “paper” work.
The work available for sale “Message 2” from 1979 is begun and developed as watercolour, then finished with gouache, thus giving the second process a superior, decisive power. In this work fragments of masks or monsters seem to loom up out of mysterious archeological strata, making it all look like an illuminated cryptic message with dancing, obscure but playful signs, like the ones fond so plentifully in Bellefleur’s work, and nowhere more than in his most fascinating gouaches.
