Biography
Born in Montreal, Quebec, he received his very first lessons in art from an Italian tutor and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal, under C. Maillard, M. Felix, St. Charles, E. Holgate, R. Pilot and H. Charpentier where he graduated with distinction. He taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts until 1962 when he received a Canada Council grant to travel in Italy to study techniques in mural painting. His studies of stained glass and fresco painting in the 1930’s have given him a good background for the many church decorations in Montreal and elsewhere in the Province of Quebec. He is also an accomplished sculptor. He completed a mural 700 square feet for the main stairway of the British-American Oil Company building on Graham Blvd. in Montreal. The mural reveals the clean and refreshing influence of his former teacher Edwin Holgate. It stretches the full height of the interior of the two storey building and depicts scenes from Quebec’s history and culture. He exhibited his non-figurative paintings at the Gallery XII in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1960.
