Biography
Born in Belgium, Gaston Rebry came to Canada in 1953 at the age of twenty. Accustomed to the pastoral landscapes of his homeland, the Canadian wilderness made a great impression on him. He became familiar with Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven whose work also had a strong influence on him. Their understanding and portrayal of landscape inspired him and stimulated the development of his own unique style.
1933 – Born October 20, in Wevelgem, Belgium
1946 – Won the first of 50 bicycle races at Wevelgem
1953 – Received a degree in drawing from l’Academie de Menen in West Flanders
1954 – Emigrated to Quebec and settled in Montreal
1956 – Studied drawing for two years at École des beaux-arts de Montréal
1958 – Worked as a sales representative while beginning to paint
1060 – Became a Canadian Citizen, settled in Repentigny
1970 – Moved to Saint Boniface, near Shawinigan in Saint Maurice Region
1972 – Devoted himself exclusively to painting
1978 – First one-man exhibition at the Cultural Center in Shawinigan
1984 – First exhibition outside Quebec, in Toronto
