It was in Mexico in the years 1940 to 1944, that Cosgrove began painting flowers simply because he could not ignore the abundance and exuberance of vegetation and also because, despite the precariousness of a budget restricted, he could still get it inexpensively and year round. Subsequently, and from time to time only, he will return to this theme and will perform a few small paintings of great delicacy in tones but will paint in all and for all only two large-format works.
The flower as such remains in the painter’s mind an object of reference rather than a subject to be reproduced, which allows him to transmit his own sensitivity. But, here, it becomes reflection and takes precedence over inspiration, it is called patience and must put aside spontaneity.
